Band to RNY - anyone had it or considering it?

I had the lap-band back in September 2006...I have pretty much lost a total of 40 lbs. I still want to lose at least another 50. I watch pretty much everything I eat, I count my calories using SparkPeople and still don't lose weight. I have PCOS so it's very hard for me to lose. I am seriously considering getting RNY at this point. Has anyone done this or is anyone else with the band considering it?

Thanks!

You should post this on the RNY board, also.  I read alot of people who have had the band then the RNY.

I had the lap band in May 2006 and through May 2008 I had only lost 45 pounds.  I too was discouraged.  Then I had to have an emergency removal in May 2008.  I had a similar experience, I followed the diet to the letter and never lost anymore weight.  I have just received an approval for the RNY and I'm scheduled for surgery tomorrow (Aug 3rd).  So I can't tell you about the experience of the RNY yet, but I can in a few weeks.  But I can relate to your frustrations and my experience sounds similar to yours.

If you would like to ask me more questions, you may email me and I'll be happy to answer anything that I can.

i had the lapband done in mexico in 2004 (selfpay), it was put in correctly and i got my fills and followed my diet but all in all i only lost about 30lbs which i have gained back and then some. I thought that there would be no hope for me because I just didnt have the money to pay for RNY on my own.  I got insurance through the state and never really considered having the RNY untill my mom started talking about doing it through her insurance.( she also had the lapband done at the same time i did and was unsuccessful) Well I didnt think that my insurance would cover it bc it was through the state and i figured they wouldnt cover anything "cosmetic" But I decided to research it anyway, and turns out they would cover it, if it was medically neccissary. I was excited but at the same time nervous because i am a fairly "healthy" fat person. if that makes any sense. Anyways I went through the whole process and suprisingly since i had a BMI over 40 and depression, i was considered medically necissary! soooo with all that being said I have surgery Aug. 10th. I am soooo excited but at the same time nervous that it will turn out just like the lapband did. But then again I have seen alot of people that have had the RNY done and they look great so im hoping that I will be one of them. wellll sry for my long story. if you have any questions feel free to message me.
Because in the end it will all be worth it Brittany

I did not have a revision but had the DS a little over two weeks ago.  I was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 13 (I'm 37) and have never had a period on my own.  I started my period two days after the DS - it fixes the insulin the problem we deal with and also has a metabolic component that made me feel energetic within days.  My surgeon refers to the turn around rate of PCOS as
'astounding' with the DS.

I know that revisions tend to lose a bit slower - but PCOS is the main reason I chose the DS.

Good luck!

I am having a ton of trouble with my band, including throwing up on a daily basis- and so violently that I am bursting blood vessels over my eyes.  I am in pain with this stupid band a lot.  My port is moved so all fills have to be done under fluoro.  Test after test and nothing shows.  Really starting to think about having my band removed as well.

When they do the band removal and revision- is it one surgery or two?

I can sympathize.  I had the Realize Band surgery a year ago this month, everything started off great.  I dropped 60lbs in a little over 4 months.  I tripped up a little over Christmas, but nothing major.  In mid January the weight loss just stopped.  I convinced myself I was in a stall and that if I just kept to the diet and kept up my excercise that I would have one of those 'miracle moments' where I would get on the scale and 20 pounds would be gone.  It didnt happen.  I stayed about the same weight from January into May then ever so slowly the scale started to creep upward.

I went with the band in the first place because everybody kept saying it was a 'safer' surgery and that I would get the same kind of weight loss.  Also didnt happen.  I have kept up with a lady that had RNY surgery the day before I did, she is down almost 100lbs.  I would KILL to hit 100.

I just dread the whole insurance rigamarole again.
